We want every moment to go our way

This is a basic characteristic of the ego mind. Where ego is strong, which
needs conflict and pain has developed a tool in the mind i.e. ‘expectation’.  In
the context of ego nature, expectation is opposite of acceptance.  Intensity of
expectation is directly proportional to the strength or density of ego.  Ego mind
expects everything to happen or not to happen in a particular way every
moment. e.g. (1)  ‘X’ person with a dense ego and having a feeling ‘I am more
impotent’ expects intensely that he should be seated in the  front always in
gatherings failing which he creates a lot of conflict and pain.
(2) ‘Y’ person with social phobia, which is also a kind of pain, expects that
there should not be a situation of social interaction failing which will create a

lot of internal conflict and pain.  It is irrational or foolish to expect a situation to
happen or not to happen in a particular way which is not in your control. 

It is simple rationality to think that everything happens as ‘programmed’ and
non acceptance of it or resisting the reality does not do any good but a lot of
harm.  Of course, we can always plan and do whatever rationally possible to
avoid unfavorable situations or to have a favorable situation in future.
The opposite of expectation in the spiritual context is acceptance.
It is the trait of an emotionally mature or spiritually evolved person to accept
everything as the situation is, without resisting the reality.  This will avoid
conflict with the present moment for life, which means harmony and peace of
mind in life.
When negative emotions or pain is felt we can meditate and realize the role
of expectation in it and develop a sense of total acceptance of the situation
which will go a long way in reducing pain and enhancing happiness in life.
